Here is the Merino campaign for the use of wool in high fashion.

Remember the days of Australia being known as a country that produced high quality garments from Australian wool? Well maybe your too young, but it is something you should look into. Just look at your latest vintage coat find, chances are it was made in Australia with Australian wool.

As a final year fashion student i've had to use and research a wide variety of fabrics. I've looked into the cost and environmental impact of imported textiles, and have also dealt with the sourcing of fabrics. It is even harder for Canberra based fashion designers, students, interior decorators etc. to access textiles for commercial use. A lot of time can be spent in ordering fabric samples, reordering samples, relying on internet pictures and descriptions, and paying additional to have fabrics delivered, is an inhibiting activity. But at least we can still order from Sydney and Melbourne not only internationally.

I've decided to support this campaign by posting it on my blog. Whether you buy fabric or garments from Australian sourced wool, you are supporting local textile and clothing industries.

I've volunteered at the CIT fashion parade for the last two years and thought it would be nice to share the behind the scene story. Its the story of many volunteers, patient teachers, technical crew and models... lots of them!

If you have any info to share, I'd love to hear about models, makeup artist and/or hairdresser details, they did a beautiful job.

I went past Magnet Mart to get some gumboots since mine had cracks and they said they've sold out, as had Big W and Bunnings... not good news since in 2 weeks we need to buy 6 pairs for models for a school project.

The Clothing Exchange... Tilley's, Lyneham

Here's a report back from the last Clothing Exchange held in the beautiful surrounds of Tilley's:

I'm impressed by the clothing stands and hangers, which although not the sturdiest, are completely flat. The stands are laser cut from ply and the hangers made from cardboard.

The nice presentation of the clothes goes some way to transform the vibe of an event that could've seemed more like a Vinnies scrounge (not that I don't also engage in those activities too :)

...funny, I ran into friends that I didn't even know were going and had a great time drinking wine and talking clothes.

The hosts sorting and hanging the garments...

....tokens (aka buying chips), and time between registration and swap to have a glass of wine!

...to be fair the swap commences after instructions regarding the number of of garments you can have at once.

You can tell who's swapped before they've already eyed the garments and make a beeline for them...

Indonesian Embassy Textile Exhibition... CIT, Reid

The Indonesian Embassy in Canberra put on a special exhibition for CIT students of Songket fabric which is featured here in the designs of Fashion Designer Zainal Arifin.

The models who arrived straight from the airpot, performed both traditional dances and modelled Arifin's designs.

Its been a steep skill learning curve studying fashion design and although I'd made a decision early on to keep CAPITAL THREAD about what I observe, not who I am or what I do, its been hard to justify keeping that stance when I'm not actually posting any new content. Since all my time is taken up by studying I think its due cause to show where my attention has been for the last 6 months.

So apologies in advance and in retrospect, but its hard to take photos of people if you hardly ever see anyone new. I will keep the Canberra based style coming but in dribbles, and some of it more centered around my interactions as a fashion student.
